As the co-lead vocalist and guitarist of Pink Floyd, David Gilmour is a name that needs little introduction. CBE, member of the UK Music Hall of Fame, US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and one of the greatest voices in rock history – Gilmour defines iconic. Rattle That Lock was his first album in 9 years, his second solo number-one and the winner of the best album cover at The Art Vinyl Awards 2016.
We had the honour of designing the cover artwork in collaboration with our hero, Aubrey Powell (Po), Creative Director for Pink Floyd. Po’s artistry has featured on covers for Pink Floyd, T.Rex, Paul McCartney and Led Zeppelin throughout a career spanning five decades.
We created every aspect of the design from producing the original landscape photo (taken in North Wales on a wet Wednesday by Rupert Trueman from Storm Studios) to hand-painting the birds and allowing their wings to take flight on each page throughout the suite of products. Our concept was translated to all global advertising, including an installation on the legendary Hollywood Boulevard.
The project climaxed when our concept was taken through to the live visuals for David Gilmours World Tour, presented in the legendary Pink Floyd circular projector.
